It's actually very common for a single bowel movement to have mixed stool types - you're definitely not alone in wondering about this!
Right now, Balloon supports logging one type per entry. The best approach is to choose the type that appeared at the end of your bowel movement.
Why log the last type?
The reason is rooted in how digestion works. Stool in your colon moves in sequence, and the part that comes out last has usually spent less time in the colon - so it tends to be softer or more liquid (a higher number on the Bristol Stool Scale).
That last portion best reflects:
How quickly things are currently moving through your gut
How fully you've emptied
Example: If your bowel movement starts as Type 4 and ends as Type 6, logging Type 6 would usually give you the most accurate picture.
Will combined logging ever be supported?
We know this isn't a perfect solution for everyone, and the ability to log multiple types in a single entry is something we've heard a lot of interest in. It's on our radar - we'll let you know if and when the feature is available!
