How do I track my water intake?

Written by Maria

Yes — water tracking is now live in Balloon. You can log every glass or bottle you drink, set a daily hydration goal, and see your progress fill up as the day goes on. Hydration is one of the biggest drivers of gut health alongside fiber, so your water sits right next to your poop, food, and symptom logs.

Water tracking is part of Balloon Plus.

Logging a drink

  1. Tap the "+" button in the bottom right corner of the app

  2. Select "Water"

  3. Choose your container — a glass or a bottle — using the button on the left

  4. Tap "Add water"

Each tap adds one container, so drinking three glasses means tapping "Add water" three times. The containers are fixed sizes:

  • Glass — 8 oz (250 ml)

  • Bottle — 16 oz (500 ml)

At the top of the screen you'll see today's total and what percentage of your goal you've hit, and the glass or bottle in the middle fills with water as you get closer to it.

Setting your daily goal

Your goal starts at 64 oz (2,000 ml) a day. To change it:

  1. Open the water screen ("+" → "Water")

  2. Tap the waves icon in the bottom right to open Water Settings

  3. Tap the big blue daily goal card

  4. Use – and + to set your goal, then tap "Set Water Goal"

You can also change it from Profile → Your Gut Health Plan → Water goal.

Goals can be set anywhere from 16 to 200 oz (in steps of 4), or 500 to 6,000 ml (in steps of 100).

A common guideline is about 2 litres — roughly 64 oz — a day, but the right amount varies with your age, sex, activity level, body size, and the climate you live in.

Switching between oz and ml

  1. Open Water Settings (the waves icon on the water screen)

  2. Tap "Measurement units"

  3. Choose Ounces or Millilitres and tap "Save"

Your goal is converted across automatically, and all your past logs are re-displayed in the new unit — nothing is lost when you switch.

Seeing your water history

Each day gets a single card showing that day's total, which appears on your daily view and in your history alongside your other logs. Tap the card to see every individual drink you logged that day, with the time and amount.

Logging water for a previous day

Water is added to whichever day is open in Day View — not to whatever the dashboard is showing. You can't change the day from the dashboard, so switch days in Day View first:

  1. On the dashboard, tap the weekly card (the row of seven days) to open Day View

  2. Swipe left or right to reach the day you want — or tap the calendar icon in the top right and pick any date

  3. Tap "+" → "Water"

  4. Check the line under the total: it reads "Today" or that day's date, e.g. "Aug 6". That's the day your drink will be saved to.

  5. Tap "Add water"

Drinks logged on a past day are timed 11:59pm

Water you log for today is recorded at the moment you tap. On any earlier day, every drink is recorded at 11:59pm instead, and that time can't be changed — there's no way to mark a drink as having been at 9am on a past day.

This only affects the time shown next to each drink. The day's total and your goal progress are unaffected.

If water goes to the wrong day

The date line on the water screen always names the day you're about to log to, so it's worth a glance before tapping "Add water". Day View also returns to today whenever you leave it, so the selected day doesn't stay in the past.

To undo a drink that landed on the wrong day, tap that day's water card, swipe left on the drink and tap Delete, then re-add it on the right day.
