Why habit impacts show low confidence or stay locked

Learn what Low confidence means and how to unlock habit impact analysis.

Written by Maria

Each habit needs enough data for Balloon to compare days with and without it. Low confidence means Balloon can show an early estimate. Locked habits means there is not yet enough comparison data to show an impact estimate.

What low confidence means

A habit appears under Low confidence when the available data does not yet support a strong conclusion. This can happen when there are relatively few days to compare, or when the difference in gut health between the two groups is small.

The percentage still shows the direction of the pattern found so far, but it may change as you log more. Low confidence describes how much support the estimate has; it does not mean the habit is bad for you, or that its impact is necessarily small.

Keep logging your habits, bowel movements, and symptoms consistently. More usable days can help, but a habit may remain under Low confidence if the difference between days with and without it stays small.

Why a habit is locked

To unlock impact analysis for a habit, Balloon needs at least:

  • 5 completed days with the habit — a yes or a goal met.

  • 5 completed days without the habit — a no or a goal not met.

Both groups must be within the last 90 days, with usable gut health data for the comparison. These are days, not the number of times you log something in one day.

Balloon needs both groups to compare them. For example, 20 days with a habit and only 2 days without it will leave that habit locked. The checkmark and cross counts beside a locked habit show the days available in each group. Each count needs to reach at least 5.

The lock in this section is about having enough comparison data. A locked habit does not mean it has zero impact.

How to build up enough data

Log what happened, including days when you did not do a habit. Keep your bowel movement and symptom logs up to date too. You do not need to wait a full 90 days; that is the period Balloon looks back over.

Only completed days count, so wait until tomorrow for today's data to be included. For habits that look at the following day's gut health, that following day also needs to be complete.

Why a result can change or become locked again

Balloon uses a rolling 90-day window. As new days are added and older days fall outside that window, the impact percentage, confidence, and available counts can change. A habit can become locked again if either comparison group falls below 5 usable days.

Once unlocked, a habit can still appear under Low confidence while Balloon gathers more evidence.
