Sync period tracking with Apple Health

Connect Cycle tracking, sync past periods, and manage your Apple Health records with Balloon Plus.

Written by Maria

Cycle tracking and its Apple Health integration require Balloon Plus on iPhone. You can bring past periods into Balloon and keep future period updates in sync. You can also use Balloon's period calendar without connecting Apple Health.

Connect Apple Health

  1. During setup, tap Connect Apple Health.

  2. On Apple's permission screen, allow Balloon to read and write Menstrual Flow.

  3. When Balloon asks Sync your past periods?, choose Sync now to bring in your history, or Not now to continue to the period calendar.

You can connect later in Profile → Connected apps → Apple Health by turning on Cycle. Cycle-related settings are hidden until Cycle tracking is enabled in your profile.

Sync your past records later

In Balloon's Apple Health settings, find Data Sources & History and tap Sync cycle data with Apple Health, then Sync now. Keep Balloon open until it finishes.

This brings available period history from Apple Health into Balloon and saves Balloon's period records to Apple Health. Read and write permissions are both needed for two-way sync.

How Balloon syncs cycle data with Apple Health

With Cycle sync on, Balloon reads period changes from Apple Health and writes Balloon period logs to Apple Health. After making changes in Health, open Balloon and allow syncing to finish.

  • Period days you log in Balloon are saved to Apple Health as Menstrual Flow.

  • Removing a Balloon-created period day in Balloon also removes the Health entry Balloon created for it.

  • Deleting a period record or marking No Flow in Apple Health updates the corresponding dates in Balloon when it next syncs.

  • Balloon can only delete Apple Health records that Balloon created. To remove a record added directly in Health or by another app, edit it in Apple Health or its original app.

If a date still has another flow record from a different source, check all records for that date in Apple Health.

Stop syncing without deleting records

Turn off Cycle in Balloon's Apple Health settings and confirm the warning. This stops automatic sync; it does not delete the records already saved in either app. You can turn it back on later.

The Cycle tracking toggle in your profile controls the feature itself. The Cycle toggle in Apple Health settings controls syncing.

Delete Balloon's period records from Apple Health

After a successful history sync, the history row changes to Delete Balloon's period records from Apple Health.

  1. Tap that row in Data Sources & History.

  2. Read the confirmation and tap Delete records to continue, or Cancel to keep them.

  3. Keep Balloon open until it finishes, then tap Done.

This deletes only the period entries Balloon added to Apple Health. Records in Balloon, records entered directly in Apple Health, and other apps' entries stay. The deletion cannot be undone. Automatic Cycle sync turns off, and the row returns to Sync cycle data with Apple Health. You can choose to sync again later to copy your current records.

Missing dates or sync not working?

Check that Cycle tracking is enabled, your Balloon Plus subscription is active, and Cycle is on in Balloon's Apple Health settings. In the Health app, open your profile, find Apps under privacy (the label may be Apps and Services), select Balloon, and check read and write access for Menstrual Flow.

Apple does not tell Balloon whether you granted read access. A completed sync with no imported dates can mean no readable records were available. Check permissions and confirm the dates exist in Health, then try syncing again. If you see a connection error, check your internet connection and retry.
